The answer is firewood that is dry but importantly if it is certified with “THE READY TO BURN”scheme you can’t go far wrong as it is an approved fuel for your open fire or stove
that said the biggest debate I have is should you buy hard or soft wood ?Hardwood is the safe option for any appliance as it is less likely to spit or spark and lasts longer when burnt, however harwood will always cost more to buy as it is harder to source with it being slow growing.
Softwood ,yes I said it softwood logs will burn quicker but they give off oodles of flames and heat and given softwood is much easier to source and replace being much faster growing therefore a more sustainable option especially if your usuing large quantities of logs, softwood logs make excellent firewood logs but they must be well seasoned and dry!So hardwood for open fires, my recommendation for stoves is a 50/50 mix of soft and hardwood(Stovemix)giving you the best of both ,a soft wood log to get your fire going then a long lasting hardwood log to give you a great fire. Another important point to consider is size of logs ,standard 10inch logs will fit most fires but if you have a large dog grate or cooker type stove you might want to consider bigger logs for efficiency likewise if you have a micro stove or a fire that draws poorly you may require smaller logs.
